Mike has been volunteering for many years. In 1990 he served on the Board of the Rainier Roadriders Bicycle Club as Vice President and in prior years was the Newsletter Editor and Tour Coordinator. That same year he was chosen as club representative to the Bicycle Federation of Washington (BFW), a statewide group established to lobby Olympia on bicycle safety legislation.

In November 1992 he was elected President of the Federation and spent two years working to improve Bicycle Advocacy and Education/Safety in Washington State.
In 1994 the Federation was approached by NOWBIKE, another northwest group dedicated to bicycle safety education, to discuss a possible merger. As President, Mike played a key role in the subsequent merger. The resulting organization had revenues from grants and operations totaling over $150,000 per year. In early 1995, the Bicycle Alliance of Washington emerged and has subsequently worked to pass the Cooper-Jones Act, which became law in 1998.
Mike stayed on the board until the fall of 1995. While serving on the Board of the Bicycle Federation, Mike was elected to the board of Cascade Bicycle Club of Seattle (over 6,000 members) and later assumed the treasurers position. Cascade's revenues at that time were approximately $850,000 and growing. During his time at Cascade (1993-1996), revenues grew to $1.2 million and retained earnings reached approximately 8 percent of gross.
Mike was treasurer of Ridgeview Estates Community Association from 1997 to 2008. During his eight year tenure the Board has completed a major water system improvement project and paved two miles of road.
Mike has also served on the Board of the Freeland Chamber of Commerce and Friends of Freeland where he served as Secretary and Chair of the Vision 2025 Committee.
