HISTORY

Freeland, our rural haven on South Whidbey Island, has recently been attracting residential and commercial development. As a result, in 2000 Island County put together a committee of citizens to develop a “Sub Area Plan” to guide future development of the area.

The spark that created FOF occurred when several members of the Freeland Sub Area Planning Committee together with some Freeland-area residents who had been attending meetings, saw the need for a local group that could undertake small projects that would have an immediate impact on the quality of life in Freeland. With these modest goals in mind, meetings were held, articles of incorporation, bylaws, and a mission statement were adopted. In the spring of 2001 a board of directors was elected, and Friends of Freeland was born.
